Chambly

City in La Vallée-du-Richelieu census division, southern Québec, Canada, on the Bassin de Chambly, a widening of the River Richelieu, 25 km/15 mi east-southeast of Montréal; population (1991) 15,900. Its canal (1843), 19 km/12 mi long, carries traffic from St-Jean-sur-Richelieu in the south to the Bassin, avoiding the river's rapids. Today the city is a growing suburb.

The first (wooden) Fort Chambly was built here in 1665 to protect against Iroquois raids. The current stone fort (1709) is a national historic park. Chambly was a mill centre in the 19th century.
