Chamonix-Mont-Blanc

French village in the département of Haute-Savoie, on the River Arve, 65 km/40 mi southeast of Geneva; population (1990) 10,000; altitude about 1,000 m/3,400 ft. It is in a scenic, narrow valley, north of the Mont Blanc mountain range. The most commonly used approach to Mont Blanc, it is a mountaineering and winter-sports centre.
