Champaign

City in Champaign County, east-central Illinois, USA, 8 km/5 mi west of Urbana; population (2000) 67,500. Originally a trading centre for the area's corn, soybeans, and livestock, Champaign today has industries producing drop forgings, alloy castings, air conditioners, bleachers, cement products, athletic equipment, and soybean oil. Together with Urbana, Champaign is the site of the University of Illinois. The city was incorporated in 1860.
