Champaign County

County in east-central Illinois, USA; area 2,585 sq km/998 sq mi; population (1990) 173,000. The Vermilion, Kaskaskia, and Embarras rivers originate here, while the Sangamon River flows through the northwestern part of the county. The twin cities of Champaign and the county seat, Urbana, in the centre of the county, form the main urban area. Rantoul, to the north, is the other sizeable urban centre in a county producing corn, soybeans, and livestock. There has been recent commercial development along Routes 72 and 74 near Champaign and Urbana.
