Zhanjiang

Coastal town on the Leizhou Peninsula in southern Guangdong province, China; population (1990) 1,099,700. In 1984 it was designated an open coastal city for foreign investment and trade. Industries include shipbuilding, food processing, and fishing. Textiles, machinery, chemicals, paper, and electrical goods are manufactured.

Together with the surrounding area, Zhanjiang was leased to France in 1898, but was returned to China after World War II.
