Chancellor, John (1927– )

US television correspondent and anchorman. Briefly Today show host 1961–62, he was the first working journalist to serve as Voice of America director 1965–67. He became NBC nightly news anchor 1970–82, appearing subsequently as a commentator.

He was born in Chicago, Illinois. Originally a Chicago Sun Times copy boy, he became a local television reporter for National Broadcasting Company (NBC) in the 1950s. By 1958, he was NBC Vienna bureau chief, covering Soviet-American relations.
