Chandannagar

City on the River Hooghly, India, in the state of West Bengal, 32 km/19 mi north of Kolkata (formerly Calcutta); population (1991) 120,400. Founded in 1673 by the French East India Company, it remained French except for two periods of British control, until it was ceded to India by treaty in 1952.
