Chandigarh

Union Territory of north India, located on the plain just south of the Shiwalik Hills, about 240 km/150 mi north of New Delhi, and bounded to the east by the state of Haryana and on all other sides by the state of Punjab; area 114 sq km/44 sq mi; population (2001 est) 900,900. Chandigarh became a territory in 1966. The president of India's union government appoints a chief commissioner to administer the territory.

Chandigarh

City of north India, in the foothills of the Himalayas; population (2001 est) 790,000. Planned by the architect Le Corbusier, the city was inaugurated in 1953 to replace Lahore (capital of British Punjab), which went to Pakistan at partition in 1947. Le Corbusier designated 235 ha/580 acres of land on the extreme southeast side of the city for non-polluting, light industry. His vision is summed up in an ‘edict’ on the city that represents his best effort at pollution control, but the edict is not strictly adhered to. Since 1966, Chandigarh has been capital of the Chandigarh territory, and capital of the states of Haryana and Punjab.
