Chaniá| City on the northwest coast of the Greek island of Crete, capital until 1971, when it was replaced by Iraklion; population (1991) 65,500. It was founded in 1252 by the Venetians and is surrounded by a wall. Vegetable oils, soap, and leather are exported. Heavy fighting took place here during World War II, after the landing of German parachutists in May 1941. |
