Channel 5

Britain's fifth television channel. Launched on 30 March 1997, it was set up by the 1990 Broadcasting Act, under which the Independent Television Commission (ITC) was required to create a fifth national channel. It was awarded by competitive tender in 1995 to Channel 5 Broadcasting Ltd, a consortium of companies including Pearson, owners of the Financial Times, and United News and Media, owners of the Daily Express and Anglia Television.

The ITC's aim in launching Channel 5 was to introduce more competition to the advertising market. Early indications were that the channel was to pitch at a downmarket audience. Its stated aim was to include seven hours of live broadcasting, and a feature film, each day. Channel 5 is the first UK TV channel to display a continuously broadcast on-screen logo.
