Active Desktop

Optional feature of Microsoft Windows that changes the desktop into the equivalent of a Web page. This feature enables programs to be run with a single click of the mouse instead of the usual double-clicking, and enables HTML content to be displayed and automatically updated in place of static images or wallpaper. Active Desktop was introduced with Microsoft's Internet Explorer 4 Web browser for Windows.
