Channel-Port aux Basques

Town in extreme southwestern Newfoundland, Canada, on the Cabot Strait, 176 km/109 mi south-southwest of Corner Brook; population (1991) 5,600. A fishing and fish processing centre, it is also a ferry port and is on the Trans-Canada Highway.

Channel-Port aux Basques was a 16th-century Basque, French, and Portuguese fishing station. In the coastal plains, it became a trade centre after railway and steamer services were established in the 1890s. The town, incorporated in 1945, amalgamated Channel, Port aux Basques, and several smaller communities.
