Chanson de Roland11th-century epic poem which tells of the real and imaginary deeds of Roland and other knights of Charlemagne, and their last stand against the Basques at Roncesvalles. | Thus we move from "heroic time" in the Chanson de Roland to "erotic time" in troubadour poetry to "Arthurian time" in Chretien de Troyes's first romances (Erec et Enide, Chevalier au Lion, and Perceval) to more problematic time in Queste del Saint Graal and La Mort le roi Artu. Part 2, "Texts and Contexts," is composed of four chapters in which the author deals with the prehistory of the romance epic in Italy and briefly points out the seminal impact that the Chanson de Roland and the chansons de geste had on Franco-Venetian and Franco-Tuscan cantari. |
