Chanthaburi

Main town and port of Chanthaburi province in Thailand, 225 km/140 mi southeast of Bangkok, on the eastern side of the Gulf of Thailand; population (1990) 40,100. It lies near the estuary of the Mae Nam on the Gulf of Thailand. There are ruby mines in the region, and a considerable export trade in timber. It is the marketing centre for the surrounding pepper, rubber, and coffee plantations.

Chanthaburi has been a stronghold of Roman Catholic missionaries since the 17th century.
