Chantrey, Francis Legatt

    0.03 sec.

Chantrey, Francis Legatt (1781-1841)

English sculptor. His portrait busts and monuments include celebrities of his time such as the Duke of Wellington, William Wordsworth, Walter Scott, Horatio Nelson, and George Washington. His unaffected studies of children were much loved in his day, notably Sleeping Children (1817; Lichfield Cathedral).

Chantrey, born in Norton, Derbyshire, moved to London in 1803. In 1808 he was asked to make a statue of George III, and the following year he obtained a commission to execute colossal busts of the British admirals Howe, Vincent, Duncan, and Nelson for Greenwich Hospital, London. This commission established his reputation for portraiture and he executed busts or statues of most of the prominent people of his time.
