Chanute

Chanute

City in Neosho County, southeastern Kansas, USA, 72 km/45 mi southwest of Fort Scott; population (2000) 9,400. It is a processing centre for a fertile agricultural area that also produces oil, gas, limestone, and clay, and has some light manufactures.

Neosho County Community College (1936) is here. A nearby mission (1824–29) is the oldest in Kansas.
