Chapel Hill

Town in Orange and Durham Counties, north-central North Carolina, USA, 16 km/10 mi southwest of Durham; population (1990) 38,700. Chosen for its healthy elevation (over 152 m/500 ft), it is the seat of the University of North Carolina's main campus (1795), and together with adjoining Carrboro forms a university community with scientific and technological research centres, but no heavy industry. Corn and tobacco are raised in the surrounding Piedmont.

Founded in 1792, it was named after New Hope Chapel, which once stood at the centre of the hill settlement.

The Research Triangle lies 14 km/9 mi to the east.
