Chappe, Claude (1763-1805)

French inventor. He created a form of telegraphic communication founded on the theory of Robert Hooke, which he presented to the National Assembly in 1792. It was successfully tried in France between Paris and Lille, and soon came into general use. Chappé was born in Brûlon, Normandy, France.
