Charente-Maritime

Département in the Poitou-Charentes region of France, including the islands of Ré and Oléron; area 6,848 sq km/2,644 sq mi; population (1999 est) 557,000. The rivers Charente, Boutonne, Sèvre Niortaise, and Touvre flow through the département, which borders on the Gironde estuary. Cereals, vines, sugar beet, potatoes, hemp, and fruit are grown, and livestock are reared. Industries include the production of brandy, iron, chemicals, and salt. The administrative centre is La Rochelle.

Charente-Maritime is formed out of parts of the former provinces of Aunis, Saintonge, Poitou, and Angoumois. Other principal towns are Rochefort and Saintes.
