Charette de la Contrie, François Anthanase (1763–1796)

French naval officer and landowner, one of the leaders in the Wars of the Vendée against the revolutionary government during the French Revolution.

He took part in the unsuccessful attack on Nantes in 1793 and subsequently began a harassing guerrilla warfare, but was captured by the revolutionaries in 1795 and executed.

After the defeat at Quiberon in 1795, General Lazare Hoche (1768–1797) pursued him relentlessly, and eventually captured him. Charette was executed in Nantes.
