Many pentecostals and charismatic Christians trace their spiritual heritage to this Azusa Street revival--when the Holy Spirit was made manifest through ecstatic worship, getting happy, healings, the "suspension in holy silence," and particularly speaking in tongues. The term Charismatic is sometimes used in a narrow sense to distinguish the Charismatic Christians within non-Pentecostal denominations from Christians belonging to Pentecostal churches. A state prison inmate who was a Charismatic Christian brought a suit claiming that a prison violated his constitutional rights by failing to use his new religiously-inspired name and to honor his dietary requests. |
