Charity Commission

UK government body, established in 1993, that keeps a public register of all charities in the UK, gives information and advice to charity trustees, and checks abuse. It is led by five commissioners appointed by the Home Secretary. The Charity Commission does not itself have any funds to grant to charitable organizations. At the end of 2000 the number of registered charities was 182,828 with a combined income of around £24 billion.
