Charles, Ezzard

    0.04 sec.

Charles, Ezzard (1921–1975)

US boxer. After the retirement of US boxer Joe Louis, Charles became heavyweight champion of the world after defeating Jersey Joe Walcott on 22 June 1949. He confirmed his championship by out-pointing Louis on 27 September 1950, when the latter endeavoured to regain the title. He lost his title to Walcott by a surprise knockout defeat, and subsequently made three unsuccessful attempts to regain it, first against Walcott who out-pointed him in 1952 and then on two occasions against Rocky Marciano. Charles was born in Lawrenceville, Georgia.
