Charles, Ray (1930-2004)

US singer, songwriter, and pianist. A vastly talented musician and popular singer, he recorded gospel, blues, rock, soul, country, and rhythm and blues. His numerous hit records include ‘I've Got a Woman’ (1955), ‘What'd I Say’ (1959), ‘Georgia on My Mind’ (1960), and ‘Hit the Road, Jack’ (1961), as well as the live albums, Ray Charles at Newport (1958) and Ray Charles in Person (1960).

Charles relaunched his career in the early 1980s after giving a show-stealing rendition of ‘Shake Your Tailfeather’ in the film The Blues Brothers (1980). The 1990s saw him release a much-lauded 50th anniversary anthology, Genius & Soul (1997), a definitive overview of his diverse recording career. He published an autobiography, Brother Ray: Ray Charles' Own Story in 1978.
