Charles City

City in north-central Iowa, USA, on the Cedar River, 40 km/25 mi southeast of Mason City; seat of Floyd County; population (1990) 7,900. A trading centre for an agricultural region, it began with a sawmill in 1851. Charles City is the birthplace of the tractor (an annual tractor festival is held in celebration); Charles City still manufactures farm machinery and is the home of the New Idea plant.
