Charles County

County in southern Maryland, USA; area 1,171 sq km/452 sq mi; population (1990) 101,200. The county is bounded to the southwest by the Potomac River, to the north by Mattawoman Creek, and to the east by the Patuxent River. Its seat is La Plata. Primarily tidewater plain, it encompasses the region of earliest settlement in Maryland. Tobacco has long been the chief cash crop, with La Plata and Hughesville market centres. Oystering and the raising of beef and dairy cattle are also important.
