Goodyear, Charles (1800–1860)US inventor who developed rubber coating in 1837 and vulcanized rubber in 1839, a method of curing raw rubber to make it strong and elastic.

| Karl-Alfred Grosch, a pioneer in friction and wear phenomena, has been chosen as the 2007 recipient of the Charles Goodyear Medal. For example, I can recall from elementary school the story of Charles Goodyear and vulcanizing rubber. Charles Slack, a journalist and freelance writer, was browsing through a biographical dictionary when he learned to his surprise that Goodyear Tire was not founded by Charles Goodyear, the New England inventor who made rubber indispensable to the modern world. |
