Charles Gustavus

    0.01 sec.

Charles (XVI) Gustavus (1946– )

King of Sweden (1973–). He was the only son of Prince Gustavus Adolphus (1906–47) and Princess Sibylla of Saxe-Coburg And Gotha (1908–72). Although Crown Prince from 1950, he did not succeed to the throne of Sweden until 1973, on the death of his grandfather, Gustavus (VI) Adolphus. In June 1976 he married Silvia Sommerlath. Soon after his succession Charles oversaw major constitutional changes in Sweden that have rendered the monarchy little more than a symbolic position.
