MacArthur, Charles (1895–1956)

US playwright, screenwriter, and film director. After working as a reporter, he collaborated with Ben Hecht on the classic newspaper play, Front Page (1928), and then on Twentieth Century (1932), both of which were Broadway hits. He went on to write, alone or in collaboration, several other popular plays and screenplays, usually sophisticated comedies. He codirected several films with Hecht. MacArthur was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania. His wife was actor Helen Hayes.

Widely acclaimed as the "First Lady of the American Theater," Helen Hayes purchased Pretty Penny with her playwright-screenwriter husband, Charles MacArthur, in the mid 1930s.
It was based on plays by Ben Hecht, Charles MacArthur and Bruce Millholland that director Howard Hawks adapted into the 1934 film ``Twentieth Century,'' starring John Barrymore and Carole Lombard.
Hayes is in a reflective mood and is shown recalling the richness of life with her late husband, playwright Charles MacArthur, and her work in the theater.
