Charlevoix

City in the northwestern Lower Peninsula of Michigan, on Lake Michigan; seat of Charlevoix County; population (2000) 3,000. It is a resort centre, the area around it being noted for its boating and fishing.

Now named after an early French explorer, Charlevoix was settled in the 1850s as Pine River. Originally a fishing colony, it became, after 1876 port improvements, a major lumber exporter. Big Rock Point is just to the northeast. The city encloses small Round Lake, which lies between Lake Michigan and Lake Charlevoix (to the southeast). The latter has a 8 km/5 mi–long main arm, at the southeastern end of which is Boyne City (population (1990) 3500). Its 6 km/3.5 mi–long South Arm extends to East Jordan (population (1990) 2200).

Charlevoix

Region of south-central Québec, Canada, along the northern side of the St Lawrence River, extending northeast for some 65 km/40 mi northeast of Québec City. It is a popular tourists' and artists' destination. Lumbering is also important. Baie-Saint-Paul and La Malbaie are its principal cities.

Settled from the 17th century, Charlevoix has long been noted for its maritime isolation and shipbuilding tradition.
