Charlevoix, Pierre Francois Xavier de (1682–1761)

French Jesuit missionary and traveller. He joined the Jesuits in 1698 and taught in their college in Québec, Canada (1705–9). He travelled up the Great Lakes and down the Mississippi to New Orleans, Louisiana (1720–22). He wrote a journal, several histories, and Histoire et description generale de la Nouvelle France/A History and General Description of New France (1744). Charlevoix was born in Saint-Quentin, France.
