Charlevoix County

County in the northern Lower Peninsula, north-central Michigan, USA; area 1,090 sq km/421 sq mi; population (1990) 21,500. The county is bounded by Lake Michigan (to the northwest), drained by the Boyne and Jordan rivers, and contains Lake Charlevoix. Its seat is Charlevoix. The county, which includes the Beaver Archipelago, depends on dairying, livestock, orchards, field crops, commercial fishing, and flour and lumber milling. There is some manufacturing in Charlevoix, East Jordan, and Boyne City.

Cartoonist and wildlife preservationist Jay Norwood ‘Ding’ Darling was born (1876) in the tiny Lake Michigan community of Norwood.
