Features Charlotte is the seat of several colleges including Queens College (1857), Johnson C Smith University (1867), and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (1965). University buildings are among the city's 57 entries on the national register of historic places. The Mint Museum of Arts contains paintings, sculpture, and ceramics. Two US presidents were born near Charlotte: the 7th president, Andrew Jackson (1767–1845), in the rural Waxhaw area, and the 11th president, James Polk (1795–1849), in Little Sugar Creek. |
