Charlotte AmalieCapital, tourist resort, and free port of the US Virgin Islands, on the island of St Thomas; population (2000 est) 11,000 (town), 18,900 (urban area). Boat-building, rum distillation, and tourism are among the economic activities. The town was founded in 1672 by the Danish West India Company. The port became the capital of the US Virgin Islands when the Danish West Indies were purchased by the USA in 1917. Charlotte Amalie was formerly (1921–37) called St Thomas. The College of the Virgin Islands (1962) and the Museum of the Virgin Islands are located there. The port is often visited by cruise ships. How to thank TFD for its existence?
