Charlottesville

City and administrative headquarters of (but administratively separate from) Albemarle County, central Virginia, USA; population (2000) 45,000. It is situated in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, 105 km/65 mi northwest of Richmond on the Rivanna River. It is the centre of an agricultural district; industries include tourism, processed food, and electronic equipment. It is the home of the University of Virginia, established in 1819 by Thomas Jefferson. Piedmont Virginia Community College (1969) is also located in the city.

Charlottesville was founded in 1762, and incorporated as a city in 1888. Jefferson's home, Monticello, is nearby, as is President James Monroe's home, Ash Lawn.
