Charonton, Enguerrand

    0.06 sec.

Charonton (or Quarton), Enguerrand (lived mid-15th century)

French painter of the School of Avignon. An outstanding early master, he created the altarpiece The Coronation of the Virgin (1453, Hospice of Villeneuve-lès-Avignon). The contract for this work survives, making both authorship and date precise.

Another document of 1454 shows that he painted the Madonna of Mercy (Musée Condé, Chantilly) in collaboration with Pierre Vilatte of Limoges. Charonton was at one time identified with the Master of Avignon, but this suggestion has since been discarded.
