Chartwell

House near Westerham, Kent, England, bought by Winston Churchill in 1922, and where he lived, with the exception of the war years, until his death in 1965. He decided to sell the house after losing the 1945 General Election, but a group of close friends bought Chartwell and gave it to the National Trust on the understanding that he continued living there undisturbed during his lifetime.

Churchill carried out extensive work on Chartwell. The interior was completely remodelled, with spacious airy rooms and large windows giving excellent views across the gardens to the Kentish Weald.
