Chase, Gilbert (1906-1992)

Cuban-born US musicologist. A music critic in the 1930s, he was a noted specialist in the music of the Americas, and his books include the classic history America's Music (3rd edition 1987).

Chase was born in Havana, Cuba. He worked for the Library of Congress and for National Broadcasting Company radio, and taught and administrated at various schools including the University of Oklahoma, Tulane, and the University of Texas.
