Chautauqua

Town in Chautauqua County, extreme southwestern New York, USA, on the northwestern shore of Chautauqua Lake, 29 km/18 mi northwest of Jamestown; population (1990) 4,600. Centred around the activities of the Chautauqua Institution, the town is a summer resort, with Victorian cottages and lake-related recreation. Chautauqua is also a seasonal centre for art and education.

The Chautauqua Institution was established here as a summer school in 1874. It developed into a system of popular education in the arts, sciences, and humanities, leading to a nationwide movement that influenced the course of American education. The institution still offers summer educational programmes and performances.

Chautauqua Lake, 29 km/18 mi northwest to southeast and 2-5 km/1-3 mi wide, has numerous resorts along its shores. The city of Jamestown is at its southeastern end.
