Chatellerault

French town in the département of Vienne, on the River Vienne, 35 km/22 mi northeast of Poitiers; population (1990) 35,000. It manufactures small arms, cutlery, and preserves, and has a distillery. The town has a 15th-century château, two 12th-century churches, and a number of historic houses.
