Chatteris

Market town in Cambridgeshire, England, 27 km/17 mi southeast of Peterborough; population (2001) 8,300. There have been a number of archaeological finds here: axe heads from the Stone and Bronze Ages, a thousand Roman coins (AD 305–06), part of the skeleton of an elephant, and a Roman quern (stone hand-mill). The town contains the site of a 10th-century Benedictine convent.
