Chautauqua County

County in the southwestern corner of New York, USA; area 2,756 sq km/1,064 sq mi; population (1990) 141,900. The county is bounded by Pennsylvania (to the west and south) and Lake Erie (to the north). Its seat is Mayville, in Chautauqua town. Its largest city is industrial Jamestown. There is also considerable industrial development around the Lake Erie port of Dunkirk in the north. The county's agriculture includes orchards and vineyards as well as market-garden and dairy farms. Chautauqua Lake and Lake Erie are vital to its tourist economy.
