Cheliff

Department in northern Algeria; area 4,734 sq km/1,828 sq mi; population (1994 est) 813,000. The department extends the Oued Chelif valley in the north to the Tell Atlas in the south. Wheat, barley, citrus fruits, grapes, and cotton are grown under irrigation, and beef and dairy cattle are reared. The administrative capital and market centre is the town of Ech-Cheliff.
