Chełm

Industrial town (metals, bricks, cement, food processing) in Lublin province, Poland, 64 km/40 mi east of Lublin; population (1990) 66,400.

Chełm was made a Russian Orthodox bishopric in the 13th century. During World War II, Chełm was the first Polish city taken in the Soviet advance 1944, and the Manifesto of Polish Liberation was issued here 22 July 1944.
