laboratory

Room or building equipped for scientific experiments, research, and teaching.

In Europe, private research laboratories have been used since the 16th century, and by the 18th century laboratories were also used for teaching. The German chemist Justus van Liebig established a laboratory 1826 in Giessen, Germany, where he not only instructed his students in the art of experimental chemistry, but also undertook chemical research with them.
