ChemnitzIndustrial city in Saxony, Federal Republic of Germany, on the River Chemnitz, 65 km/40 mi south-southeast of Leipzig; population (2005 est) 246,600. Industries include engineering and the manufacture of textiles and chemicals. As a former district capital of East Germany it was named Karl-Marx-Stadt from 1953 to 1990.
