Chemung County

County in southern New York, USA; area 1,064 sq km/411 sq mi; population (1990) 95,200. The county is situated along the Pennsylvania state line. Its seat and largest city is Elmira, a manufacturing centre. The economy of the county was revitalized by the arrival of Japanese electronics manufacturers and various other industries during the 1980s. Poultry and dairy cattle are raised, and there are some sand and gravel producers.

The county was a centre of heavy industry in the first part of the 20th century. Most of its steel, electrical, and other factories had, however, closed by 1950.
