Chen Kaige (1954– )

Chinese film director. His films re-examine Chinese culture and history, with great visual impact. They include Huang Tudi/Yellow Earth (1984) and Bawang Bie Ji/Farewell My Concubine (1993; co-winner of the Cannes Palme d'Or).

Chen is one of the ‘fifth generation’ of Chinese directors who graduated from the Beijing Film Academy in the early 1980s. Other films include Da Yuebing/The Big Parade (1986), the semi-autobiographical Haizi Wang/King of the Children (1988), and Bian Zhou Bian Chang/Life on a String (1991). Chen acted in a cameo role in Bernardo Bertolucci's The Last Emperor (1987).
