Chengde

Chengde

City in Hebei province, north China, 173 km/109 mi northeast of Beijing; population (1994) 250,000. It is a market town for agricultural and forestry products and an important tourist centre. Its palaces and temples were built in 1703 by Emperor Kangxi as a summer resort for the Manchu rulers. As Jehol, it was capital of a former province of the same name from 1913 to 1956.
