Cherapunjee

Town in Meghalaya state, northeast India; population (1991) 7,800. Situated in the Khasi Hills, it receives some of the heaviest annual rainfall in the world, averaging 10,900 mm/430 in, mostly falling between May and September. In 1861, 22,860 mm/900 in fell, a world record. The heavy rainfall results from moist air forced to rise over the Himalayan foothills by monsoon winds.
